The Dahlem complex consists of several cultural history museums: in addition to the Ethnological Museum and Museum of Asian Art, it also includes the Museum of European Cultures and the Junior Museum. The museum ensemble brings world-class collections of non-European art and culture together under one roof.

Plans for the museum complex were drawn up at the beginning of the 20th century, but the ensemble was not actually built until the 1970s. Upon completion of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin's Mitte district, the non-European collections are to be transferred here from Dahlem.
