Budapest Kiscelli Museum is one of the most beautiful architectural gems of the city. Its Baroque style building was initially intended as a cloister, designed by Viennese architect Johann Entzenhoffer. Taken over by the state in 1784, it served as military barracks and a hospital for the next 100 years. In 1910, the crumbling building was bought by the Viennese furniture manufacturer Miksa Schnidt, who renovated it and turned into an exhibition space for his furniture collection. Before his death, Schnidt bequeathed the building to the municipality on a condition that they would continue to operate a museum there. Kiscelli museum was opened in 1949 and two departments of the Budapest Historical Museum can be seen there - items of fine arts by the Capital Gallery and modern historical collection. Its fine arts collection comprises valuable pieces held by the Municipal Picture Gallery, established in 1889. Initially, the museum focused exclusively on Budapest-related artworks while nowadays greater emphasis is laid on contents and aesthetic value of art.
The museum houses the best samples of Hungarian painting, sculpture and graphical art created during the last 150 years, with a special focus laid on the 20th century and contemporary art.
The museum owns also collections of photos, posters and characteristic lifestyle items dedicated to modern period of Budapest's history.
