Mai Manó House of Photography (Budapest)
Budapeste . Margitsziget Island . Hungria

A photo gallery, featuring world-class exhibitions.

Purchased in 1892 and rebuilt in 1894 as a photo studio, the Mai Manó House used to be the home and workplace of Manó Mai, the former imperial and royal court photographer of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today, the eight-story Neo-Renaissance building, that stands as an historic landmark and a truly unique work of architecture, is home to the Hungarian House of Photography, a photo gallery, featuring world-class exhibitions. Located in Budapest's theater district, the building also houses a bookshop, library, and café.

Hungarian photography has a strong historical base. Robert Capa, André Kertész, Martin Munkácsi and Gyula Halász - better known as Brassai - were all Hungarian. The Mai Manó House continues this legacy.
